I make a rough drawing of my subject and start the glazing process by adding transparent blue in the shadow areas and yellow in the highlights. |
Next I layer with red. I add more color in areas that will be dark in the finished painting.
I then continue to layer individual glazes of blue, yellow and red and add a foundation for the birds to rest on. |
I do not apply the glazes uniformly, but leave some areas exposed or cover an area more heavily with an individual color. |
As the layers of glazes continue the form of the subject starts to take effect.
I refine the feather detail on the birds as I add the layers to create the dark birds.
I often wait until my subjects are developed before I do the background, other times I create an abstract background before I add my subject to the canvas. |
I added light blue highlights to accentuate the crow's forms.
Adding red and yellow to the background brings out the reds in the crows and is the complement to the blue highlight color.
Further refinement of the highlights and work on finalizing the eyes.
Add more interest to the background and break up the triangular rock form.
Further layers of transparent and opaque paint creates a rock wall instead of a pinnacle. Also finished blending the overall tones to create a uniform painting. |
